Michael's arrived.

My other brother, Michael, has arrived from Germany also via Stuttgart. He tried putting his Zippo in his luggage that was going to be dumped in the hold after mine got gutted.

It didn't help. They x-rayed his luggage before he got to hand it in and made him take it out. Luckily my father was there to take it home for him. I'm not sure how my father plans to get it across the border when he goes home though.

Apparently it's not a problem if it hasn't been used. It's only if it smells like Zippo fluid that they get upset... perhaps it freaks the dogs out.

The story of Zippo confiscation.

Approximately a year after 9-11 an American resident decided to prove a point on the slack security that still existed at US airports. He passed through security with a Zippo in his shoe and carried on other items that together could build and ignite a bomb. Once the plane was in the air he revealed these items (no to use, but to make a point). Once the plane had landed he was escorted away by Homeland Security, put on trail and convicted of terrorist acts (WHATEVER). Since then, we have to remove our shoes and we can not take on nail files, knitting needles, blah blah blah…other crap, AND NEVER EVER A ZIPPO.

Really?

I wasn't going anywhere near the US though...

So do you spend the whole flight without shoes or is it just for the security check?

Heathrow and Frankfurt don't mind Zippos. Going through both of those airports I just put it in the tray provided with all my other bits and pieces that I had on me and it wasn't a problem. That's why I was so suprised when they blocked me at Stuttgart.

Germany isn’t near the US? I had no idea? I was just saying, maybe our security measures have flowed over into some parts of Europe.

Would you like it if we had to keep our shoes off during the entire flight? Nope, just through security.
